Securus Technologies is a multifaceted enterprise that provides a broad array of services, solutions, and products to meet various needs of correctional agencies in the United States and Canada. One of the newer technologies launched by Securus Technologies is Wireless Containment Systems, or WCS.
WCS is designed to identify and eliminate illegal cellphones from inside correctional institutions. The reality is that at this juncture in time, the illicit use of cellphones within correctional institutions is a major problem. A considerable number of inmates in U.S. correctional institutions have been able to have cellphones illegally smuggled in for their use.
Securus Technologies reports that it monitored the number of illegal communications the firm prevented over the course of one year at eight correctional institutions in North America. During that one year time period, Securus Technologies prevented about 1.7 million illegal communications by inmates.
There are thousands of correctional facilities located from coast to coast in the United States, and many more in Canada. These include correctional institutions on the state, federal, and local level. Currently, Securus Technologies provides its services, solutions, and products to about 3,400 law enforcement as well as correctional agencies in North America. There are about 1.2 million inmates at the institutions where Securus Technologies provides its solutions of different types.
Securus Technologies does not stand alone when it comes to battling illicit cellphones in correctional facilities. Robert Johnson is a prime player in advocating for taking serious steps to eliminate cellphones from correctional facilities in the United States.
Robert Johnson had been a corrections officer for the state of Florida. One day while working his shift, Johnson discovered a box filled with contraband that ultimately was valued at about $50,000. Johnson prevented the contraband from getting into the institution, from getting into the hands of inmates.
Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story. The inmate that was trying to get the contraband into the facility was displeased with Johnson in preventing the operation from coming to fruition.
In addition to being upset, the inmate had an illegal cellphone in his possession. He used the cellphone to reach out to a criminal associate. He directed the associate to murder Johnson. The associate went to work and prepared to murder corrections officer Johnson.
After receiving his orders, the associated broke into Johnson’s home early one morning. He shot Johnson multiple times. The corrections officer nearly died, but somehow managed to survive.
When he healed, Johnson went to work advocating aggressively for correctional facilities to take aggressive action to eradicate cellphones from inside these institutions. He speaks on the subject and consults with correctional facilities to assist them in developing strategies and protocols to identity and eradicate cellphones from facilities.
