Michael Lacey is a mathematician who holds a very high standing among his colleagues and peers. He has actively contributed to the study and theory of mathematics over his distinguished career. As a professor of mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) he has developed a reputation as one of the most trusted mentors in the mathematics department. Michael Lacey earned his PhD in mathematics from Illinois in 1987. Michael Lacey has been a prolific publisher of works in the field of mathematics over the years and has also been a part of several prominent collaborations with other highly regarded mathematicians Most notably, in 1996 he worked alongside esteemed mathematician Christoph Thiele and the pair came up with the solution for Alberto Calderon’s Hilbert Transform conjecture. For this outstanding work, the two were awarded the prestigious Salem Prize. 2004 saw Michael Lacey win the Guggenheim Fellowship along with fellow mathematician Xiaochun Li for their collaborative efforts.

After exploring the bilinear Hilbert Transform during his time at Indiana University the first of many awards and prizes began to roll into the lap of Michael Lacey. One of the first awards he received was from the National Science Foundation who provided Lacey with a Postdoctoral Fellowship and was followed by the Salem Prize for his work in the same area. As his career has moved forward, Michael Lacey has also been awarded a range of other awards including the respected Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fellowship of the American Mathematical Society.
Dr. Saad has practiced surgery in more than 40 years performing hundreds of surgeries on children. He has helped in eight medical missions in Jerusalem even though his main practice is in Eatontown in New Jersey. The missions involved performing complex surgeries for free to children from poor backgrounds. Additionally, Dr. Saad has two inventions and has come up with numerous surgical procedures.
Inspiration to Medicine
During a recent interview, Dr. Saad admits that while still in high school back in 1965, he wanted to become an engineer just like his older brothers. He was in Kuwait during his high school days. He says Kuwait experiences hot summers with temperatures exceeding 110 degrees F. He experienced several summers in the country and realized he would like to choose a profession where he would be working in a room with controlled temperature and has air conditioners rather than outdoors such in the construction industry. He, therefore, choose to be a doctor to operate in an air-conditioned room. Dr. Saad uses surgeon skills as well as talents in engineering to improve people’s lives.
His Experience in Saudi Arabia
Despite being based in New Jersey, Dr. Saad qualified top practice surgeon in Saudi Arabia. One of the reasons was that he had board certification in pediatric surgeon fluent in English and Arabic. Board certification is difficult to achieve in the US due to rigorous exams. Moving to practice surgeon in a different country is challenging, but during his visit to Riyadh, he received a warm welcome. Also, he was comfortable since spoke Arabic. Dr. Saad took the job and had the rare chance to work with the royal family for more than 4 years. During the stay in Riyadh, he worked in King Faisal Specialist Hospital. He was also invited by Protocol Office to perform complex surgeries.
King Faisal Specialist Hospital mainly offers care to Saudi Arabia’s Royal Family. However, it also serves royals from the Persian Gulf, UAE as well as Bahrain. Importantly the Royal Family also opens the facility for assisting the poor with complex surgical operations. Dr. Saad outlined that his mentor taught him to be honest and kind as well as treat all children equally irrespective of financial status, color, abilities or religion. Dr. H Biemann Othersen from Charleston was his mentor.
He is a graduate of a medical degree from the Cairo University School of Medicine. He serves as a surgeon at Monmouth Medical Center and as a doctor at Jersey Shore Univesity Medical Center. He practices pediatric and general surgery in Eatontown as well as at Forked River. He has two inventions in his name including the visual suction endoscope and the catheter.
